When it comes down to creating flat surfaces in your wood, the table saw or planer will work, however, the jointer will come in more handy. For the table saw or the planer to work, you must have one flat edge, but not for the jointer. That is pure magic.
What is a jointer?
The jointer has two flat tables and in-between these tables are precision blades that create a rotating cutter head. The first table is lower than the second, and the cut feeds across the second. The depth of the cut will be decided by the height of the second table. The jointer has a fence for helping with placement when working with a square jointer.
Jointers and danger
This tool has safety features, though it is a cutting tool and is potentially dangerous. You must keep your hands and loose clothing from the blade. The thinner the piece of stock, the more potential danger it carries. In order to keep their hands away from the cutter, many woodworkers use a stick to push stock through.
Safety is A Must
The most efficient way to use the jointer when it comes to straightening your stock is to make several passes to remove small amounts of wood rather than taking one big chuck. This will protect your tool as well as make a better cut. Thinner cuts cause less strain on the motor of your jointer.
As with any tool it is important to read all the safety instructions and the operation guide before using your jointer. A man may be more hesitant to read this than a woman. Safety goggles are invaluable when working with any kind of woodworking project especially when cutting and it is always a good idea to protect your hearing by wearing ear protection. Blindness and hearing loss are not good things!
How do you work it?
Allow the motor to reach full speed before cutting. Use only a small amount of pressure. Apply gentle pressure and keep it feeding at a controlled rate. Stand opposite of the fence. As the piece finishes going through the cutters your right hand needs to be on the out-feed table portion of the stock so that your hand is away from the cutter head. Until its finished. Make sure the stock goes through. Carefully lift the stock up and away from the out-feed table and bring it back to the in-feed table to repeat the cut.
